For a unique adventure the whole family will enjoy, head on over to Mount Diablo State Park. The park itself contains a plethora of treasures that are just waiting to be uncovered, including one of the most fascinating geological oddities in the state of California: Rock City. Park rangers say that Rock City is the second most visited attraction within the park. Mount Diablo's summit is the first. This just proves what a unique wonder this place is and it's a must-visit for all nature lovers. Climb and scramble all over the massive boulders, dwell within the rock's cool caves, and take in the breathtaking sights. This is a place that must be seen to be believed.
At a stunning 20,000 acres, Mount Diablo State Park is home to all sorts of incredible sights. However, you definitely don't want to visit the park without stopping by the one and only Rock City—a unique site full of the weirdest rock formations you've ever seen.
Rock City is a popular destination within the park for a multitude of reasons. It's easily accessible and therefore popular for families with small children. The small contained site isn't too overwhelming but is chock full of things to do and see.
Rock City can be found along the mountain's southern road in between Danville and the summit. The area contains a large parking lot and picnic tables, making it a great place to have lunch and spend the day exploring. And trust us, there's a lot to explore!
The area is full of these incredible sandstone rocks that are soft and smooth, easily carved by natural forces like water and wind (and man-made forces, as well. You'll notice a lot of initials carved into the rocks). As a result, the rocks take on unique shapes and boast incredible features such as small caves and tunnels.
Rock City is really like a giant natural playground. Both kids and adults could easily spend hours climbing up on the boulders and dwelling within all of the little cracks, nooks, and crevices. It almost looks like something from a different world, but it's right here in Northern California.
One of the most notable features of the area is a place called Sentinel Rock. The large boulder is easily climbed via the carved steps and installed safety railings.
The view from here is simply incredible. Pause for a moment and take it all in. On a clear day, the landscape of brush-covered mountains and valleys seems to go on for as long as the eye can see.
Rock City is a wonderful destination if you're looking to explore for a few hours but don't have the time to drive all the way out into the wilderness. Pack up some snacks, plenty of water, a camera, and make a day of it!
Rock City is located off of South Gate Road approximately one mile north of South Gate Kiosk.
NOTE: A small brush fire was extinguished near the summit of Mt. Diablo on August 23, 2018. The park is still open for visitors during regular hours. However, a burn ban is currently in effect at the park which prohibits open fires, campfires, or charcoal fires. Please be mindful of this if you do decide to visit!
