Stroll Then Swim on This Beach Hike in Northern California That’s Perfect for Summer

A hidden coastal gem in San Mateo County, Pescadero State Beach combines scenic hikes, tide pool discovery, and a brisk ocean dip for the ultimate summer escape.

Now that it's finally summer, it’s time to slather on the sunscreen and hit the great outdoors. For those who want to pack in a day of both hiking and a refreshing ocean dip, it’s time to check out Pescadero State Beach. Located along Highway 1 in San Mateo County, this underutilized gem is far less crowded than Santa Cruz or Half Moon Bay, making it the perfect Northern California experience.

Getting There

Under an hour south of San Francisco, Pescadero is the ideal leisurely day trip away from the city. Upon arrival, you’ll find that the beach stretches for about a mile along the briny coast and is divided into three sections: north, central, and south. Each area has its own parking lot and classic California vibe. The top of the list is the North Lot, which has paid parking, restrooms, and easy access to both the beach and the local marsh trails.

Start with a Beach Hike

To begin, your adventure should start along the Pescadero North Pond and Beach Trail. This easy 1.7-mile loop twists and turns along the sandy bluff and back to the beach, perfect for warming up your legs as you take in the sweeping views of the Pacific. You’ll find coastal shores, windswept dunes, and a few seals lounging here and there on offshore rocks.

As you continue your journey, you can explore the southern tide pools, specifically if you are touring during low tide. Take a moment to stop and search for anemones, starfish, and the occasional crab hiding amongst the rocks. Be sure to wear shoes that have a good grip, as the rocks can be slick, especially after the morning fog rolls in.

Take a Cold Plunge

It’s widely known that in upstate Northern California, the Pacific Ocean is no tropical bath, the water stays around 50 degrees to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, even in the summertime, but that’s part of the fun! If you are feeling brave or smart enough to have brought a wetsuit, now is the time to take a plunge into the surf. The north area of the beach tends to have gentler waves and a more sandy shoreline, ensuring pleasurable conditions for swimming or floating. On warm days, nothing beats the feeling of drying off on the sand while soaking in the sun and sea breeze.

Explore the Marsh Trails

Post beach vibes, it’s time to cross under the highway to visit the Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve. This sprawling wetland is an ecosystem flooded with bird life. Both the Sequoia Audubon Trail and the Butano Creek Trail will weave you through grassy fields, marshes, and riparian woodlands. Birdwatchers rejoice with sightings of blue herons, egrets, and red-tailed hawks, so have those binoculars ready!

The trails here are flat and easy, making them accessible for all ages; since most visitors stick to the beach, you might have much of the marsh to yourself.

Know Before You Go

Pescadero State Beach is open every day from 8:00 a.m. to sunset. There is a paid parking lot that is easily accessible, but if you don’t mind a free lot with fewer facilities, two are a short walk away. There is no drinking water or trash bins available. Please come prepared and leave no trace. As always, don’t forget to bring layers, sunscreen, snacks, and plenty of water.

Pescadero State Beach is more than just a beach; it’s a full-day escape packed with natural beauty. Whether you're hiking along coastal bluffs, wading into chilly surf, or birdwatching in the marsh, you’ll find a peaceful slice of California wilderness just waiting to be explored.
