Underrated National Forest Hikes in Arkansas That Rival Hot Springs National Park Hike

While your experience in the Ouachita National Forest will be wildly different from the one you'll have at Hot Springs National Park, it's worth hiking through some of its 1.8 million acres.

The best-known national park in Arkansas is, without a doubt, Hot Springs National Park. With its historic Bathhouse Row and hot springs, it's where people go for wellness and relaxation to bathe in its therapeutic thermal waters. This national park, which sees over 2.6 million visitors annually, is also home to stunning forested trails through the mountains. But with fewer visitors annually, you may want to try one of the many underrated hikes in Ouachita National Forest, ones that rival those in its national park counterpart. While your experience in the national forest will be wildly different from the one you'll have at the national park, we think it's absolutely worth exploring some of its 1.8 million acres. Here are a few trails to check out:

1. Little Missouri Trail

Home to Little Missouri Falls, the Little Missouri Trail falls within the national forest's Little Missouri Falls Recreation Area. While this picturesque trail is nearly 15 miles long, you don't have to trek far to enjoy the scenery. Due to its length, multiple river crossings, and steep sections, some extra planning is necessary for this trail, but once you see the falls and the views from the top of the cliffs, you'll know that the physical effort was well worth it.

2. Crystal Vista Trail

Within the national forest is Crystal Mountain, an area that was once home to a former 4-acre crystal mine. Hike the Crystal Vista Trail and you may find some treasures along the way. Take some tools, like a chisel and a hammer, to dig for quartz along this 1.7-mile trail or just enjoy looking at the sparkling crystals on your hike.

3. Ouachita and Lake Sylvia Trail

On the 4-mile Ouachita and Lake Sylvia Trail, you'll eventually encounter a few creeks and the park's 18-acre lake as you hike. While the scenery is lovely, wearing long pants due to bugs and sturdy shoes due to loose rocks along the way is recommended. Because this trail is relatively underrated, you may have it all to yourself if you want some solitude in nature.

4. Forked Mountain Falls

Just a short mile-long hike will lead you to the stunning cascade known as Forked Mountain Falls. This popular waterfall in central Arkansas is one you'll want to spend as much time as possible when you arrive. I suggest taking a picnic and enjoying the serenity as you dine.

5. Hunt's Loop Trail

The start of Hunt's Loop Trail is at Iron Springs Picnic Area off Highway 7. You'll discover epic views as you approach an overlook on Short Mountain near the picnic area. The trail is well-marked and well-maintained; however, there may be some areas with slippery leaves. From Hunt's Loop Trail, you can continue onto the much longer Ouachita National Recreation Trail if you'd like.

There you have it — some of the most underrated trails within Ouachita National Forest that rival those you can take in Hot Springs National Park. While both areas offer natural beauty and unique attributes, the national forest is a great alternative if you prefer more solitude and recreational opportunities.
