Discover Ouachita National Forest, Arkansas’ Most Beautiful Hidden Gem
The Ouachita National Forest is the best national forest in Arkansas. It's known for lush greenery, towering mountains, and majestic waterfalls.
The Ozark National Forest gets a lot of love (and rightfully so!), but in my opinion, the Ouachita National Forest is even more beautiful. Stretching from central Arkansas into southeastern Oklahoma, this verdant oasis is one of the largest national forests in the U.S. It offers countless opportunities for hiking, camping, swimming, and otherwise enjoying the natural beauty Arkansas is known for. It is the Natural State, after all. Embark on scenic trails leading through rugged mountains and deep valleys, swim in waterfall-fed pools, and observe native wildlife in the best national forest in Arkansas. There are so many reasons to fall in love with this special place; it just might become your new favorite escape when you’re craving some time in the great outdoors.
Encompassing nearly two million acres, the Ouachita National Forest features majestic waterfalls, picturesque rolling hills, winding scenic drives, and plenty of peace and quiet. The forest is primarily located in the Ouachita Mountains, whose towering peaks stretch up toward the heavens and provide stunning panoramic views from their summits. Whether you’re interested in hiking, camping, or water recreation, there’s something for everyone here.
Hiking is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think about forests, and if you’re an avid trailblazer, this is the perfect place for you. The Ouachita National Forest has trails of various lengths and difficulties, so all skill levels can experience the magic of setting off into the wilderness. People travel from all over the world to hike the Ouachita National Recreation Trail, a 212-mile-long route that begins at Pinnacle Mountain State Park and winds through the mountainous landscape before ending in southeast Oklahoma.
The trail is like a hodgepodge of all the best things in nature, from the lush greenery to the rocky hillsides to the pristine waters of the Big Maumelle River. Of course, you don’t have to hike the whole trail — many people just do the portion in Pinnacle Mountain State Park, which is about 2.5 miles. It’s suitable for beginners and still provides amazing views without the headache of planning a long backpacking trip.
