The 8-Mile Trail Near Arkansas’s Buffalo National River Worth the Sweat

Explore one of the best Arkansas hiking trails with waterfalls, caves, and mountain overlooks. Your next outdoor adventure in the Ozarks starts here.

I'm a firm believer that Arkansas hiking trails are some of the best in the U.S. After all, the nickname “The Natural State” was chosen for a reason. From the iconic Hot Springs National Park to the stunning beauty of the Ozarks, Arkansas is overflowing with scenic destinations for your next outdoor adventure. If you’re up for a more challenging hike, consider the 8-Mile Sneeds Creek and Hemmed in Hollow Trail, located in the stunning Ponca Wilderness near the Buffalo National River. This rugged trek through the untamed Ozark landscape is quite the journey, but you won’t regret it when you see where it leads.

Picture this: you’re hiking through a forest so green, it looks like something from a fairytale. The sound of rushing water up ahead is a teaser for the awe-inspiring natural wonder that awaits. As you approach a clearing in the trees, you see it: one of the tallest waterfalls in middle America, cascading down the walls of a box canyon with a force so powerful, it takes your breath away. That's the scene that will unfold before you when you hike the Sneeds Creek and Hemmed in Hollow Loop near Buffalo National River, and it's an experience you'll never forget.

With an elevation gain of over 1,600 feet, this popular loop trail travels to Sneeds Creek, then up Hemmed-in-Hollow, the box canyon I mentioned previously. The dense forest terrain crosses the creek at several points, and there are many small waterfalls along the way. As if all the natural landmarks weren't enough to keep things interesting, you'll also come across the historic Granny Henderson's cabin. The early 1900s homestead of Eva ("Granny") Henderson, this well-preserved home has been abandoned for decades, but it remains an enduring symbol of rugged self-sufficiency and frontier grit. Hikers are welcome to go inside the cabin and admire the original wallpaper, fireplaces, and family heirlooms.

There's also a hidden cave to explore, and the adventure still isn't over yet. The last leg of the journey is the ascent to California Point, a mountain whose summit offers unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape.

Pause for a moment and revel in the stillness that comes with being deep in the Ozarks. It's so quiet that the whole world seems to stop for a moment, and lush greenery covers the mountains like a blanket. After catching your breath for a bit, you'll be ready to finish the hike strong, with a sense of accomplishment and memories that will last a lifetime.
