The Buffalo National River was originally established as the first National River in 1972.
The entire river runs west to east for 153 miles through upper Arkansas. The river begins at the tip top of the Boston Mountains and eventually joins the White River. The National River designation means no dams or industrial development can occur.
Last year the Buffalo River in Arkansas made international headlines for becoming one of the first Dark Sky Parks in the world.
The river was the first Dark Sky Park to be established in the south and is one of less than one hundred found around the world.
