The Round Top Mountain plane crash hike in Arkansas offers expansive views. It also leads to the wreckage of a devastating event that took place in 1948. Part historic, part somber, this hike is nonetheless worth taking. Come along as we explore this popular hiking spot.
There are many reasons to visit Jasper, Arkansas, and Round Top Mountain hikes are one of them.
Round Top Mountain has a pleasant 3.5-mile loop around the base and up to the peak. We wouldn't recommend this as a first hike for a novice, but it is perfect for a family that enjoys taking day trips along different trails.
Any season brings a fresh view to the mountain, but we're particularly fond of fall.
There's something special about spotting the sheer rocks through the colorful foliage. And it's quite the reward to reach the top vista and see the sea of colors.
The trail has multiple features that make it a true Natural State treasure.
Take stone-cut staircases through the forest to reach the top. Along the way, you'll pass fascinating rock formations, a bluff shelter, multiple caves, enjoy plenty of peeks through the trees to gorgeous views, and our main feature - the plane crash.
A rather unexpected sight in the middle of the woods are the remains of plane wreckage from 1948.
On the night of February 6th, 1948 a B-25 bomber crashed into the side of Round Top Mountain. The plane took off in Dayton, Ohio and was suppose to land in Little Rock. The plane was used for training and was carrying five men at the time of the crash. It's thought that freezing rain and thick fog led the plane's wings to ice over.
Be sure to have a moment of silence while you pass this somber spot.
There used to be more of the wreckage left to observe. We shouldn't have to say it, but be absolutely sure to only leave with pictures, not things.
After a stop at the crash site, our trip will ascend to the tippy top of Round Top.
The expansive views from the mountain are absolutely splendid and worth any sweat you may have broken along the way. For more information and photos, visit the Round Top Mountain page on AllTrails.
