Although it's impossible for us to pick just one favorite spot in all of Arkansas, the gorgeous region around Ponca and Jasper would certainly be a top contender. Just south of Jasper resides the stunning Round Top Mountain. Nearly everyone can enjoy hiking the trail to the top for a gorgeous panoramic payoff. Let's take a hike and see what beautiful views await us.
Round Top Mountain is a lovely, but underrated spot in the Ozarks.
For directions from Jasper, use this map.
The trail is a 4-mile loop around the mountain.
The trail is rated a moderate because of the elevation gains but most any casual hiker can easily take on the trail.
If you can handle the first 10 minutes of the hike, the rest of the trail is a breeze.
The elevated switchbacks are the most difficult part of the hike but they can be conquered in the first portion of the trail.
Along the way you'll come across some impressive rock formations...
There's also a marker for a Bomber plane that crashed in 1946. Not much is left but it's interesting to spot the remnants.
...as well as a small Native American rock shelter to explore.
Fall and winter are the best times to hike the trail. You may need to bushwhack during the greener months.
The panoramic views are the best reward for taking on the trail.
Even on cloudier days, you can still see for miles.
Round Top Mountain is a lovely spot for a picnic with a view.
As always, mind small children around the bluffs and be sure to leave no trace.
