With over 50 state parks in Arkansas, we find it hard to narrow them down to the best ones. If it were up to us, we would recommend them all because each has its own unique character. Some are gorgeous winter wonderlands, others are covered in pretty little wildflowers, many have stunning waterfalls, and most are paradises for outdoor enthusiasts, waiting to be discovered.
If you enjoy spending time on the water in the spring and summer, we have several parks that deliver on that. Leaf peepers and folks who enjoy snowy landscapes, you’re covered, too. Regardless of what activities your heart desires, there is an Arkansas state park you’ll want to explore. So, here’s a list of the best state parks in Arkansas, one for every month of the year. Chances are, some of these destinations might become your go-to spot. I have my favorites, and of course, they all made this list.
January - Mount Magazine State Park (Paris)
What better way to jump-start the year than from the highest point in Arkansas? During the frosty season, Mount Magazine State Park transforms into a spectacular winter wonderland waiting for you to explore. And the panoramic views from the lodge overlooking the snow-covered mountains below are what winter dreams are made of. Enjoy a day of hiking, ATV riding, or hang gliding off the mountain for a thrilling winter experience. If you can't make it to any other park this year, I would add this one to your list.
February - Mount Nebo State Park (Dardanelle)
Mt. Nebo State Park is pretty any time of year, but it’s especially breathtaking after a dusting of snow. You’ll be awestruck by the views of Lake Dardanelle as well as the Arkansas River Valley below. Enjoy a day of hiking to see the frozen waterfalls or spend some time sipping hot cocoa in one of the rustic mountain cabins. Or if you're anything like me, you'll take the Mount Nebo Scenic Drive just to admire the views from various points on the mountain. No matter what you choose to do here, I promise, you will never forget your time at this breathtaking state park in Arkansas.
March - Devil's Den State Park (Winslow)
After the Winter frost has dissipated, enjoy a lovely hike at Devil's Den State Park, which is surrounded by natural beauty. Spend your days fishing or paddling on Lake Devil or exploring the jaw-dropping rock formations and caverns. With its waterfalls, lush forests, and jaw-dropping rock formations, this park is the reason the Ozarks is considered one of the most beautiful destinations in the country. You really can't deny it.
April - Cossatot River State Park (Wickes)
Spring brings those April showers that fill our beautiful rivers and lakes. This makes it a perfect month to visit the Cossatot River State Park to take advantage of the most incredible waterways in Arkansas. The 12-acre park, situated along the rocky Cossatot River, is a dream come true for expert kayakers. It also boasts scenic trails, camping, picnic areas, and more. Even though the park is small compared to the other playgrounds in Arkansas, it certainly has plenty of activities to keep you busy.
May - Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area (Rogers)
If you’re a mountain bike enthusiast, May is the perfect month to explore the bike trails inside Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area. Voted as one of the most amazing outdoor bucket-list spots in the country, this park has lots to offer. As the largest state park in Arkansas, it offers a 54-mile multi-use trail system featuring stunning views of Beaver Lake and pretty little wildflower blooms along the trails.
June - DeGray Lake Resort State Park (Bismarck)
Tucked on the banks of DeGray Lake, DeGray Lake Resort State Park is a paradise for anyone who loves the water. Aside from the lake, the park boasts golf courses, disc golf, tennis courts, hiking, and horseback riding trails. From the lodge, you can admire the stunning views of the lake, and with its heated pool, the park is a great destination to kick off the summer with some fun in the sun. You can also rent party barges, kayaks, or pedal boats for even more enjoyment on the lake. The fun is endless at this resort state park in Arkansas.
July - Lake Ouachita State Park (Mountain Pine)
Home to Arkansas’s largest and cleanest lake, Lake Ouachita State Park is heaven on earth for anyone who enjoys water activities. Surrounded by over 200 islands with views of the scenic Ouachita National Forest, this island paradise is perfect during the warmer months. Some of the activities here include swimming, skiing, scuba diving, boating, and kayaking, just to name a few. For those who enjoy soaking up the rays, kick back on the sandy shores of one of the islands. If you ask me, this is one of the best destinations in Arkansas for summer fun.
August - Lake Fort Smith State Park (Mountainburg)
Lake Fort Smith State Park might just be one of the most underrated state parks in Arkansas. The good news is that there is so much to love here, and the park can be explored in many ways. Spend the day kayaking or fishing on one of the cleanest lakes in Arkansas. Or hike the trails that meander through the scenic Ozark region. Bring your mountain bike for extra adventure, or plan a camping trip and spend the night underneath the twinkling stars. You'll never run out of fun things to do here.
September - Lake Catherine State Park (Hot Springs)
If you’re searching for a peaceful adventure, visit Lake Catherine State Park in September. This state park offers stunning views of Lake Catherine, where you can relax on the shores and enjoy a cocktail as the sun goes down. Not to mention the pretty waterfalls in the park. Photographers will find inspiration here. The park also boasts a full-service marina, waterfront cabins, hiking trails, and seasonal guided horseback tours. It’s a great spot to spend the last holiday weekend of the summer.
October - Petit Jean State Park (Morrilton)
While Petit Jean State Park is breathtaking year-round, the best time to visit Arkansas’ most beloved state park is during the fall. With gorgeous autumn hues, this destination truly comes alive. As the first state park, it is one of the most stunning and a true representation of why Arkansas earned its nickname as The Natural State. The jaw-dropping 95-foot Cedar Falls is a must-see, as well as the incredible rock formations. Bring your camera along, you'll need it as you explore this picture-perfect state park in Arkansas.
November - Village Creek State Park (Wynne)
You haven’t experienced fall until you spend some time at Village Creek State Park in November. This 7,000-acre park is surrounded by the most beautiful hills and streams. The park boasts a 27-hole championship golf course, cabins, lakes, equestrian trails, a museum, a visitor's center, and so much more, making it a perfect place to spend a lovely fall day. Bring the entire family along to enjoy this outdoor playground.
December - Queen Wilhelmina State Park
Tucked at the top of Rich Mountain, Queen Wilhelmina State Park offers breathtaking views, especially during the winter months. After a wintry snowfall, this state park transforms into a magical wonderland. Book a stay at one of the renovated inns for a truly enchanting experience. Explore the hiking trails and scenic overlooks, and marvel at the incredible sweeping views from atop the mountain. It’s the perfect destination to end the year in Arkansas.
