We Love Our National Parks, but This Arkansas State Park Is Just as Magical

Mount Nebo State Park is one of the most underrated state parks in Arkansas. It sits on a mountaintop and offers stunning views of the Arkansas River Valley.

When you think of outdoor adventures in Arkansas, Hot Springs National Park is probably the first place that comes to mind. Don't get me wrong, Hot Springs is a bucket list destination everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. I mean, ancient thermal springs, historic bathhouses, a landscape so verdant it looks like a scene from a fairytale... what's not to love? That being said, the fact that our state is home to such a major tourist attraction means many state parks in Arkansas fly under the radar, even if they're brimming with natural beauty. One such place is Mount Nebo State Park in Dardanelle, an Arkansas River Valley gem with scenic views, incredible hiking and biking trails, rustic cabins, and endless opportunities for adventure.

Less than an hour from Arkansas Wine Country, Mount Nebo is something of a geologic wonder because it isn't connected to a larger mountain range. It's a lone wolf, standing at an impressive — but not insurmountable — height of 1,350 feet, with the state park perched at the very top.

Mount Nebo State Park boasts over 32 miles of hiking and biking trails constructed by the CCC a century ago. Trails vary greatly in length and difficulty, so whether you're looking for a leisurely walk or a strenuous hike, there's an adventure for everyone here. The Three C's Entrance Trail is just over one-tenth of a mile long with no elevation gain, while the Chickalah Valley Loop spans just over seven miles and ascends nearly 1,000 feet.

The 1.6-mile Summit Park Trail is one of the most popular trails in the state park. It's named after the Summit Park Hotel, which was built near the trailhead in 1889. The loop gradually winds down to the beautiful Fern Lake, intersecting with the Bench Trail. Either stay the course or take the alternate route; it's your adventure to choose.

Standing atop Mount Nebo and taking in 360-degree vistas of the vast, rugged landscape is a surreal experience. The park has many picnic benches (many shaded) where you can relax and admire the scenery. You can also take a scenic drive through Mount Nebo State Park to enjoy the views from the comfort of your car.

If you're interested in camping at Mount Nebo State Park, it offers 15 cabins and 34 campsites. Twelve cabins are located along the mountain's rim and provide stunning views of the Arkansas River below. While rustic (after all, the CCC built most of them!), the cabins boast many modern amenities, including satellite television, heat, air conditioning, and full kitchens.

As for the campsites, 24 have water and electric hookups, and the remaining 10 are primitive hike-in sites. If you don't have an RV, you can always rent one from RV Share at an affordable price. Additional amenities include tennis courts, pavilions, and a swimming pool.

Visit the Arkansas State Parks website for more information about Mount Nebo State Park, including current hours of operation, entrance fees, and a full list of trails.

Have you ever visited Mount Nebo? If so, do you think it's one of the best state parks in Arkansas? We'd love to hear your thoughts.
