There’s A Restaurant Hiding At The Bottom Of The Grand Canyon That’s Only Accessible By Hike
Phantom Ranch Canteen, located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, offers a unique dining experience accessible only by hiking, mule ride, or rafting.
We’ve written about several restaurants that are located in remote areas and require a pretty long drive to access but we might have found the most remote one there is! And get this: the best and only way to access it is by hiking (or riding a mule). And we bet the surrounding landscape is simply stunning!
This is Phantom Ranch! Located way deep down on the floor of the Grand Canyon, it is a historic lodge located near the confluence of the Colorado River and Bright Angel Creek.
So how do you get there? It may be one of the longest, most impressive treks you’ll ever take. The least expensive and most popular option is to hike, which is what most visitors choose when traveling down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
You will find that others opt to ride a mule or horse down the narrow trail or even raft the Colorado River.
And once you make it to Phantom Ranch, you’ll find The Canteen, the perfect spot to enjoy a hearty meal after a long trek down into the canyon. Meals need to be reserved in advance but when you hear that dinner bell ring, you know it’s meal time!
Inside, you’ll find a communal dining setting with long tables to congregate with other hikers and share bowls of food.
The meals are hearty, nutritious, and more palatable than the energy bars or freeze-dried food you may have snacked on earlier that day! Just be sure to get your portion quickly because the food goes fast!
The Canteen serves breakfast and dinner in this style, with vegetarian options and other dietary requests available.
If you’re unable to make reservations for a meal here, the Canteen is still open for limited hours as a shop and common area. Here, you’ll get to buy snacks, a sack lunch, some supplies, and mail off a mule-delivered letter!
This is one experience you won't want to miss out on!
Phantom Ranch Canteen is located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon via the Kaibab or Bright Angel Trails. You can find details about rates, seating times, and making reservations by visiting grandcanyonlodges.com.
