This Enchanting And Historic Town In Montana Is The Perfect Day Trip Destination
People from all over the country visit Montana for its forests, mountains, beautiful lakes, and other attractions. Between the history and the beauty, it’s no wonder more than 12 million tourists flock to the state each year. But, this is no secret to residents who are already aware of just how lucky they are. In fact, there’s little reason to venture outside the state when so much exists right here. That includes the small towns that are full of history and beauty. The next time you want to experience a piece of this, consider visiting Fort Benton, Montana.
Beautiful Fort Benton sits in Chouteau County and was established in 1846. This makes it the longest-running occupied settlement in the state. In its early days, it was an important part of the fur trade. Today, the main part of downtown feels like stepping into a slower way of life.
Visiting Fort Benton, Montana means access to both history and nature. Head outside town and you'll find the Missouri River. This is perfect for kayaking and enjoying the scenery that surrounds the town.
Visitors particularly love the Fort Benton Historic District, which sits along the water. With a walking path, benches, and things to do along the way, this is a great place to get to know the town a bit better.
While you're enjoying the waterfront, consider a stroll across the Bridge to Nowhere which was built back in 1888. No vehicles have been allowed on the bridge since the 1960s, but it's perfect for a relaxing walk.
Don't forget to keep an eye out for Old Shep. This monument honors a loyal sheepdog who followed his owner to a local hospital after he fell ill. For days, he kept vigil outside and today, he's honored as an important part of the spirit of the town.
If visiting Fort Benton, Montana requires more than just one day for you, make sure to book a room at the Grand Union Hotel. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and some even say it's haunted. But, ghostly visitors or not, the remodeled hotel certainly makes for a beautiful stay.
