This 1.8-Mile Trail Was Just Named The Best Hike In Missouri’s Gateway Arch National Park

Missouri’s hiking trails meander through a vast, eclectic landscape – from its sprawling state parks to right in the heart of its big cities. No matter your interests, you’re sure to find a hike to match. Recently, Conde Nast Traveler issued its list of the best hike in every national park in the United States. Missouri’s Gateway Arch National Park earned recognition for its easy, picturesque trail that leads to one of the state’s most recognizable landmarks.
Stretched across a cozy 91 acres, Gateway Arch National Park draws visitors from across the United States and the world, predominately for the popular monument.
If you’ve got free time before or after your journey to the top of the Arch, follow the 1.8-mile Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Trail that meanders through the park.
Allot at least an hour for your visit to the Gateway Arch – from the tram ride to the top to time spend admiring the sprawling views of St. Louis.

Boasting a paved path that’s around six feet wide most of the way, the trail earns an easy rating from All Trails. That makes it doable for hikers of all ages and skill levels.
However, there are sections of the trail that can be steep for those in a wheelchair or who are pushing strollers, so keep that in mind before you set off.
The trail offers breathtaking views of the Arch and of the Mississippi River, which you can admire from one of the park benches, if you need a breather.
Consider bringing a picnic along, too, as the park is dotted with picnic tables and drinking fountains. (Just remember to take anything you bring into the park with you back out of the park.)
Towering trees provide a canopy of shade in some areas of the trail, although plan to bring enough water and sunscreen if you’re visiting on a hot and sunny summer day.
If you’ve got enough time, consider making a day of it. After your trek along the picturesque path, go to the top of the Arch (if you haven’t already), and visit the Museum at the Gateway Arch.
