U Pick Farms In Mississippi: Mert's Satsumas

Think you’ve already visited all of the U-pick farms in Mississippi? Well, have you been to Mert’s Satsumas? If you answered “no,” don’t feel too bad. Many residents are completely unaware of its existence, and that’s a real shame because it’s one of the only citrus farms in the state.

Mert’s Satsumas is a small mom-and-pop farm in Gulfport.

The farm’s roots go back to 1999, when husband and wife Glenn and Valeri Merritt began planting citrus trees.

The personal hobby quickly turned into a burgeoning business.

Today, the farm features more than 500 trees, supplying citrus to local residents and area businesses.

Satsumas are the farm’s primary crop, but they’re not the only crop.

The Gulfport farm grows a wide variety of citrus, including an experimental hybrid, which is a mix between a satsuma and navel orange.

During satsuma season, which typically runs from mid-September through early-January, the farm opens its orchards to the public, allowing visitors to stop by and pick their own citrus.

There’s pre-picked citrus, too, and that’s in addition to homemade specialty products, like satsuma pickle jelly.
