This Mississippi General Store Is Too Charming For Words

Long before the days of WalMart and other big retailers, general stores were the go-to place for basic grocery and household needs. Today, the concept of a general store may seem outdated, but they do still exist. One perfect example of these charming stores of the past is H. D. Gibbes & Sons in Learned, MS.

Located about 30 miles southeast of Vicksburg, you’ll find the small town of Learned. The quaint town is dotted with buildings of yesteryear.

One such building is H.D. Gibbes & Sons, which has come to be known as Gibbes Old Country Store. The building was first constructed in 1892 and has remained in the Gibbes family ever since.

One step inside the store and you’ll instantly be transported to the past.

The shelves that line the walls are filled with groceries and other new items for sale.

And what would a general store be without fresh produce?

There are also vintage items for sale, some of which date back to the early days of the store.

The antique cash register is another reminder of the store’s age. And it is still used for transactions.

Toward the back of the store, you’ll find an old stove pipe heater.

Even further adding to Gibbes’ appeal, the country store turns into a makeshift restaurant on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, and has gained a reputation for serving out-of-this-world steaks.

H. D. Gibbes & Sons is located on Main Street in Learned, and is open year round "except for holidays and funerals." A visit to this Learned treasure is a chance to experience some true Mississippi nostalgia! Have you ever visited Gibbes? Is a trip in your future?
