2. Blue Water River Walk
Blue Water River Walk, 51 Court St, Port Huron, MI 48060, USA
Next, spend a bit more time in Port Huron with a scenic adventure along the Blue Water River Walk, which offers visitors the chance to gaze out upon the St. Clair River in all its brilliance. There’s nearly a mile of land to peruse along the river, so this is an ideal place to stretch your legs after spending time in the car. Snap a few family photos, watch freighters pass by, or simply settle in for a relaxing experience.
When you’re through in Port Huron, it’s time to hop in the car and venture to Sleepy Hollow State Park. This underrated gem in Laingsburg is far less spooky than its name implies, offering visitors more than 2,600 gorgeous acres to explore. During your visit, take time to hike, ride your bike, admire forested splendor and fields, and appreciate a real sense of quietude. There’s even a campground for those who wish to extend their visit to Sleepy Hollow.
You’ve heard of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, but have you made memories at Nordhouse Dunes? This brilliant section of land along Lake Michigan is nothing short of magical, offering recreational opportunities for all ages and some of the most unforgettable scenery in the state. Enjoy a walk along the sandy shoreline, picnic among the dune grass, experience approximately ten miles of hiking trails, or simply snap a few photos. You’re sure to be enamored when you make a pit stop here.
After enjoying everything Nordhouse Dunes has to offer, enjoy a laid-back outing in the quaint town of Leland. It’s here that you’ll find Fishtown, a history-rich collection of long-standing fishing shanties and other buildings along the waterfront. Snag dinner at the Cove, watch as boats make their way to and from Lake Michigan, or do a bit of shopping throughout the area. No matter the season, you’ll be charmed by this spot.
While Petoskey State Park is smaller than some of its counterparts with only 303 acres, its impact is impossible to deny. This beautiful natural area is tucked away along the north end of Little Traverse Bay, an inlet of Lake Michigan. If you’re visiting during the warmer months, you’ll find an awesome beach where the whole family can splash, sunbathe, and unwind. There are also campsites split between two campgrounds, so you’ll have the option to stay overnight if you just can’t get enough of Petoskey State Park.
Upon venturing into the Upper Peninsula, the opportunities for scenic exploration only seem to increase for travelers – but we’re especially keen on Kitch-iti-kipi. This natural spring boasts some of the bluest waters you’ll ever find, hence the sense of magic that abounds throughout this Manistique area gem. The broader Palms Book State Park is just as enchanting, so set aside plenty of time to explore during your road trip.

This unique rock creation is approximately 50 feet wide and stands high above the surrounding shoreline. While there are boat tours and bikes available for those who want to spot the rock, it can also be experienced completely free of cost via a two-mile out and back trail. Don’t forget your camera!

One of the main draws of this area is the eye-catching Straits of Mackinac, which feature a glittering blue hue that perfectly complements the Mackinac Bridge. Check it out for free when you stroll at Wawatam Park in Mackinaw City, which offers complimentary on-site parking and the chance to bask in incredible vistas.
Tahquamenon Falls. One of Michigan’s true treasures, Tahquamenon Falls is peak #PureMichigan. Tahquamenon Falls is actually two enchanting cascades, both located inside the eponymous Tahquamenon Falls State Park. One of the most visually stunning cascades in the country, the signature brown running through these falls comes from tannins absorbed from cedar and hemlock swamps. While this chemical reaction can cloud the falls in the summer, during the winter months, the tannins infuse the frozen falls with a delightful -- and unexpected -- pop of color.
