Michigan’s Most Magical Natural Spring, Kitch-Iti-Kipi, Is Enchanting In The Winter
You might think that Michigan’s prettiest natural attractions are reserved only for warm-weather months. After all, many of our state’s most popular spots bustle with activity during summer and spring, when tourists make their way here to explore. Luckily for those of us who call the Great Lakes State home, though, Michigan’s beauty is in full bloom all year long – and one of our top outdoor destinations offers guests an extra-special atmosphere during the chilly winter months.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. Kitch-iti-kipi is located off Sawmill Rd within Palms Book State Park in Manistee.
This incredible freshwater spring has long delighted visitors of all ages with its natural splendor. Indigenous Ojibwe inhabitants gave the spring its name, which means “big cold spring.”
Also referred to as the “Mirror of Heaven,” Kitch-iti-kipi boasts vibrant turquoise waters and sits among lush forested surroundings. It doesn’t get much more beautiful than this.
During warmer months, Michiganders and visitors alike flock to the spring for a chance to step onto a viewing platform and snap a few scenic photos among the splendor.
When winter rolls around, though, Kitch-iti-kipi remains open -- and the views you’ll enjoy here during colder seasons are just as magnificent. Winter is pure magic within the park.
Gaze at the snow-topped foliage while making the short trek from the parking area to the spring itself. You might just feel like you’ve stepped into a genuine winter wonderland.
The cedar and pine trees around Kitch-iti-kipi are especially lovely in the winter, when they seem to sparkle with bits of ice. If that weren’t enough, crowds are rare during these months.
If you’re in the market for a family-friendly outdoor adventure this winter, add Kitch-iti-kipi to your must-see list. This spot remains endlessly spectacular throughout the entire year.
