The 2-Hour Road Trip Along Alger County’s Waterfall Trail Is A Glorious Spring Adventure In Michigan
Are you already plotting your next great adventure in Michigan? Our state is chock full of natural attractions that add magic to any travel plans, but there’s something special about checking out the Upper Peninsula in all its splendor. One natural feature of the U.P. that sets it apart is its abundance of glorious waterfalls, and one area is especially rich with enchantment. Follow this waterfall trail in Michigan for a journey like none other.
From beginning to end, the trail extends for approximately 44 miles. With time added for gas breaks, pit stops, and unexpected detours, you should anticipate approximately two hours of driving time. If you’d like to tailor this outing to your specific needs, check out our
of the route.
1. Au Train Falls
Au Train Falls, Au Train Township, MI 49862, USA
Start things off at Au Train Falls, which actually consists of two separate upper and lower falls areas. Situated along the Au Train River, the larger upper falls tumble down for approximately 40 feet, while the lower falls extend about ten feet. 2. Wagner Falls
Wagner Falls, Munising Township, MI 49862, USA
Next, venture to Wagner Falls Scenic Site for a breathtaking experience. The falls, which are tucked away among towering trees that add to a sense of whimsy, can be reached via a half-mile trail from the parking lot. 3. Memorial/Twin Falls
Memorial Falls, Munising, MI 49862, USA
Also known as Twin Falls, Memorial Falls is next on your Alger County waterfall outing. Be forewarned that the falls (which technically consists of two separate streams) are best viewed following a rainfall to maximize flow – but the hike and surrounding spaces are still worth exploring, even when the falls aren’t as lush as they might otherwise be. Turn onto Nestor Street off H58 and park before enjoying a short but rugged hike to the falls area, which features a breathtaking gorge and plenty of surrounding foliage.
4. Munising Falls
Munising Falls, Munising, MI 49862, USA
Continue your drive down H58 until you reach the Washington Street Junction outside of Munising. From here, you should have no trouble locating the parking area that gives way to Munising Falls. Lace up your shoes and head out along a paved trail that extends for just a quarter-mile, appreciating flora and fauna along the way. Next, climb a set of stairs to access lovely views of the 50-foot waterfall, which drapes over a sandstone formation with ease. What’s not to love?
5. Miners Falls
Miners Falls, Munising Township, MI 49884, USA
When you’re through at Munising Falls, return to the car and venture to Miners Falls. This brilliant spot is perfect for visitors who want to get in a short hike while appreciating ample natural beauty. The round-trip hike from the parking area to the falls is about 1.5 miles, so it’s long enough for a bit of exercise without completely exhausting your whole crew. Check out two overlooks for a view of the 50-foot waterfall – you can even traverse down a staircase to get a closer look.
6. Chapel Falls
Chapel Falls, Munising Township, MI 49884, USA
The parking area for Chapel Falls sits approximately 15 miles from the heart of Munising, so continue your drive along H58 before turning onto Chapel Road and hopping out to explore. There’s a real sense of majesty at Chapel Falls, as this towering stream of water tumbles downward for an impressive 60 feet. Visitors can enjoy a lush trail that extends for 1.2 miles before reaching the falls’ viewing area. The trail even continues beyond the falls if you’d like to continue your hike and keep exploring the area.
