Despite the fact that we reside in a major city, many Detroiters have a genuine love for the great outdoors. When summer temperatures rise, there’s nothing more refreshing than heading out for a leisurely hike among the flora and fauna. As you prepare for your next outdoor adventure here in Metro Detroit, keep these seven easy and scenic hikes on your must-visit list.

Make the short journey to Farmington Hills, where you’ll find this 1.8-mile loop trail that offers loads of natural beauty in every season. During the summer months, you’ll appreciate plenty of greenery, patches of wildflowers, and lovely glimpses of the on-site pond. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a few deer making their way through the wooded splendor.
2. Hudson Mills Hike and Bike Loop Trail (8801 N Territorial Rd, Dexter)

For Detroiters who love to ride bicycles, the Hudson Mills Hike and Bike Loop Trail is an ideal summertime option. This pathway extends for approximately three miles near Dexter and features smooth, largely flat pavement that’s great for guests who are on wheels or on foot. By the time you’re through, you’ll feel reconnected with nature and fully refreshed.
3. Belle Isle Lighthouse Trail (Belle Isle, Detroit)

If you prefer to stay within the city limits, venture to beautiful Belle Isle and take a stroll along its stunning lighthouse trail. This 2.2-mile walkway features views of Blue Heron Lagoon, the Detroit River, and a history-rich lighthouse that’s just begging to be photographed. The serene atmosphere along this trail might just make you forget you’re in Detroit.

This one-mile trail at Carpenter Lake Nature Preserve in Southfield features an abundance of lovely scenery and allows dogs to accompany their owners. Watch for views of Carpenter Lake itself and gaze up at towering trees during your short but sweet journey along this pathway.
5. Robinwood Park Loop (640 Robinwood Dr, Troy)
In addition to play space for younger guests and an exceedingly peaceful atmosphere, Robinwood Park houses a loop trail that extends for 1.1 miles and allows visitors to truly embrace the beauty of nature. Greenery is the name of the game here, and you’ll be surrounded on all sides by plenty of lush growth. When you need to get away from it all and enjoy some fresh air, Robinwood Park is a must-visit.
6. Douglas Evans Nature Trail (31845 Evergreen Rd, Beverly Hills)

The Douglas Evans Nature Preserve is an 18-acre wonderland of wildlife, trees, colorful flowers, and so much more. When you visit, take time to walk along its 0.9-mile nature trail, a lovely loop that is decidedly beginner-friendly and offers views of the River Rouge. Dogs are also welcome to join their humans at the preserve, however, they must be kept on a leash throughout. Talk about an awesome outdoor adventure.
7. Newburgh Lakeview Trail (off Edward Hines Dr, Livonia)

This underappreciated trail extends for just over three miles out-and-back and takes visitors on a dreamy adventure. You’ll enjoy everything from views of Newburgh Lake itself to boardwalk sections to greenery and wildlife galore. Best used during the spring, summer, and early fall months, this trail can be amended into a loop if you’re searching for a more challenging walk.
