There’s A Hike Near Detroit That Leads You Straight To An Abandoned 1920s Estate
Are you ready to take a step back in time – literally? While we might not have access to time travel technology just yet, we do have the opportunity to explore some of the most fascinating historical destinations in and around Detroit. One such locale is paired with a beautiful hiking trail, so lace up your boots and head out for an amazing jaunt through the past.
Highland State Recreation Area is located at 5200 Highland Road in White Lake.
This sprawling natural attraction is home to all sorts of recreation options, including a unique hiking space known as the Historic Haven Hill Trail. It’s here that you’ll find a portal to the past.
To begin your journey, park in the Circle Parking Lot and stroll for approximately a quarter-mile before reaching an entrance gate. From here, you’ll need to walk a bit further for full access.
So, what sort of magic awaits you along this path? As its name suggests, the Historic Haven Hill Trail provides access to the ruins of Haven Hill, a once-opulent estate owned by Edsel Ford.
Edsel, the son of auto tycoon Henry Ford, built this breathtaking home in the woods with his wife Eleanor in the 1920s. At its height, Haven Hill featured riding stables, a pool, a lodge, and more.
Following the Fords’ deaths, the estate was sold to the park system. Sadly, much of it has crumbled and deteriorated over the years. Today, curious visitors can explore what remains of Haven Hill.
As you walk, you’ll enjoy views of the now-defunct tennis courts imported from France, the Haven Hill carriage house, a towering fireplace, and more. There’s so much to experience here.
In total, this trek stretches for approximately 1.4 miles, so it’s perfect for a quick escape. Bring along your camera as you walk - this is one timeless adventure that you’ll surely want to remember.
