Massachusetts is full of incredible railroad history. Entire communities sprang up sound train stops and shipping routes. Evening though the golden age of rail travel may be over, you can still check out some of the state’s most fascinating train-themed attractions on this awesome road trip.
The entire journey will take just under four hours, but you should definitely budget time for exploring!
Hop on this nostalgic street car from the early 1900s and cruise through streets of Lowell on this free trolley excursion. The National Park Service operates nearly two miles of trolley tracks right that run right through Lowell. It’s an utterly unique way to see the city if you can peel your eyes away from the gorgeous vintage interiors of the street cars. While you’re in the neighborhood, stop by The Trolley Pizzeria on Gorham Street for a quick bite.

Bernie’s Dining Depot in Chicopee is located in an old passenger train coach. They serve old-fashioned meals that come in absolutely massive portions. Their legendary Conductor’s Cut is a full two ribs ad at least four inches of prime rib, cooked and served on the bone. Plus, it’s only $32. If you’re not a die-hard carnivore, there are plenty of other delicious menu options like decadent lobster macaroni and cheese.

Steaming Tender Restaurant in Palmer is located in the old, restored Palmer Union Train Station. The dining room is truly gorgeous and filled with decades of railroad memorabilia. There’s a huge locomotive parked right outside, and you can rent out the restaurant’s vintage parlor rail car for special events.
Now that you've fueled up, it's time to get out and explore a piece of genuine Massachusetts railroad history. The abandoned Clinton train tunnel is hidden in the forest bordering gate Wachusett Dam and about a quarter-mile long. It was built in the late 1800s and its construction necessitated the removal of over 4,000 bodies from nearby cemeteries. For this reason, some locals swear the tunnel is haunted. Unlike many old railroad properties, this spot is open to the public for exploration. Bring a flashlight and your sense of adventure.

It’s a thrilling activity that’s suitable for kids and adults. The museum also features a fascinating collection of memorabilia from the railway history of Shelburne Falls. Operating out of North Adams, the Saturday Evening Cabaret Getaway Train is the perfect way to cap of a day of train exploration. This after-dark event lets passengers bring their own food and wine and enjoy an on-board musical show delivered by talented singers and musicians.
