Swallow Falls State Park is home to Maryland's most wondrous waterfall, known as Muddy Creek Falls. While here, you can also hike to the nearby Swallow Falls, which is a mere mile trek. During wintertime, the falls freeze over and it's like a surreal winter wonderland.
This hidden gem in Boonsboro has more formations per square foot than any other cave in the world. Really! It's also the most naturally kept cave, so don't expect any cheesy add-ons like you'd find in other "show caves." Bring a hoodie, because this natural wonder is a crisp 54 degrees year-round.
Maryland's largest cascading waterfall is a unique sight, indeed. Sit along the rocks as you watch the water trickle past. This is a one-of-a-kind spot for a picnic as long as you're sure to clean up after yourself.
Maryland has quite a few scenic overlooks but it seems a favorite among most is the pictured King and Queen Seat. It's said that this natural rock outcropping was a meeting place for local tribes long ago. It's full of history but even more full of scenery, especially during autumn. Enjoy the view!
The powerful Potomac River is a natural wonder all on its own, but Billy Goat Trail is a particularly picturesque spot for viewing it. Section A of the trail includes rocky climbs that border the water. It's moderately difficult but the effort is so worth it once you see the stunning sights.
Calvert Cliffs State Park is home to these natural clay cliffs that hug the bay. Inside, you'll find fossils, including shark teeth, from the Miocene era (10 to 20 million years ago). On the beach you'll find people sifting through sand, looking for treasures. Keep your eyes peeled and you never know what you'll find.
This sprawling barrier island is most known for its wild horses. Did you know that you can also camp overnight right on the beach? Or take advantage of the bay side and nature trails. There's so much beauty to explore and you could spend several days among this dreamy place.
