You’ll Be Happy To Hear That Maine’s Fall Foliage Is Expected To Be Bright And Bold This Year
While it still feels like summer most days in Maine, if you get up and outside early enough you’ll feel the unmistakable breeze of autumn. It’s subtle, but clear: summer is on its way out and fall is coming! That might feel like a bummer, but the blow is lessened when you remember that fall foliage is just around the corner. Here are the fall foliage predictions in Maine, including what you can expect this year!
Believe it or not, we have Maine's frigid winter to thank for the beautiful fall foliage we're about to experience.
It's impossible to forget the cold temps we saw in January. Winter brought snow early in the season, but then we saw that wonderful respite in the form of temperatures in the 70s across much of New England, including Vacationland.
This warm weather led to cold temps that stayed. And stayed and stayed and stayed. Things didn't warm up until April, which meant the trees didn't show their green leaves until later in May than usual.
Much less rain fell in during spring this year. Luckily all the snow that fell throughout the winter provided enough water for the trees, allowing the lack of rain to be a GOOD thing for Maine's trees.
The lack of rain has meant that damaging fungus never had a chance to grow, which is something we always need to look out for if we want a vibrant, leafy fall. Despite the lack of rain in the summer, recent rain has picked up making for happy trees.
Fall should include lots of sunshine with well-timed rain and overnight temperatures in the cool range. As long as that's true, leaves should be vibrant and full, putting on a show we'll all love.
The strength and vibrancy of fall leaves will be most impacted by how cloudy the skies are, and how cool the nighttime temps are. A lot of rain can take away from the bright colors, but this isn't expected to be a problem.
