It’s Worth It To Drive Across Louisiana Just For The Mac & Cheese At Rocky & Carlo’s
There’s nothing better than a good, old-fashioned comfort meal. Whether that’s a massive bowl of red beans and rice, a tower of onion rings, or a foot-long po’boy dressed to perfection is a matter of personal preference, but when it comes to comfort food, it’s hard to deny that macaroni and cheese reign supreme. There’s one long-standing restaurant that’s serving up some of the best mac & cheese in Louisiana, and it’s worth the drive. Let’s check it out:
Rocky & Carlo's Restaurant and Bar has been a neighborhood favorite in the Chalmette area since it opened in 1965.
Tommy Tommaseo opened the restaurant alongside his brothers-in-law, Carlo, Mario, and Giuseppe "Joseph" Gioe, and still is a family-run business over 50 years later.
Wondering why the sign says "Ladies invited?" Well, prior to opening the restaurant, the brothers worked at a nearby place that was known for being a bit of a boy's club. When they opened Rocky & Carlo's, they wanted to be clear that everyone was welcome. Nearly 60 years later, it's hard to imagine the building without those signs.
The dining room is massive, which seems to be a theme here.
Everything is just bigger at Rocky & Carlo's. But don't let the size of the dining room fool you, this place fills up quickly during peak hours!
Just on the po'boy side of the menu alone, you have 14 options to choose from.
From traditional fried oyster po'boys to veal parmesan po'boys, you'll have your hands full (literally) with this one!
Of course, lighter options are available as well.
Even their salads look delicious!
A visit to Rocky & Carlo's isn't complete without getting an order of their famous mac & cheese.
We think it's the best mac & cheese in Louisiana, and for good reason! This iconic comfort food is made from scratch every day, and they'll tell you the secret: it's all about timing.
Known for the laughably large portions, the mac & cheese is more like a mountain than a side dish.
Go big or go home, right? Now, you may be wondering about those sauces behind the mac & cheese mountain.
Well, you've got a very big decision to make: how do you want your mac & cheese?
Plain is certainly an option, but for the full experience, you've got to try it with their famous gravy, both red and brown. But be warned: once you try it this way, there's no going back! It'll become your go-to way to eat mac & cheese.
