You’ll find the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum nestled in the heart of the French Quarter over on Charters Street.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Pharmacy Museum is a fascinating look at the history of pharmacy and healthcare in Louisiana.

From the moment you step inside, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back through time.

During your visit here, you’ll be able to catch a rare glimpse of what healthcare was like centuries ago.

It will certainly give you an appreciation for how far we’ve come.

The museum is housed at the same site of the apothecary of the first licensed pharmacist in the United States, Louis J. Dufilho, Jr.

He opened his shop here in the early 1800s and also lived there until 1855, when he sold it to Dr. Joseph Dupas and his wife, Fleitas Dupas.

While Dr. Dupas died in 1867, many believe that his spirit never left the building. Dr. Dupas has often been seen around the museum.

He is seen wearing a brown suit and a matching top hat, and likes to throw books around and set off the alarm systems in the middle of the night.

The Pharmacy Museum is open five days a week.
