There’s A Kentucky Trail That Leads To A Surprise Waterfall The Entire Family Will Love
Kentucky is a warm and welcoming state, and this spirit of inclusion is a theme in many of the state’s trails. Some of the best hikes in Kentucky are the easiest, in fact; these are the kind of treks suitable for beginners and families alike. If you’re looking for an accessible hike the whole family can enjoy, Jessamine Creek Gorge is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Kentucky Horse Country that winds through lush forest and leads to a babbling brook and surprise waterfall.
Located in beautiful Jessamine County, in the palisades region of the Kentucky River, Jessamine Creek Gorge Preserve is 155 acres of natural wonder.
It's a glorious hidden gem that's home to some of the most scenic and accessible hikes in the state, including the eponymous Jessamine Creek Gorge Trail.
For families, points of interest like wooden foot bridges, rock steps, babbling brooks, and active wildlife are sure to keep little legs eagerly moving the entire time!
In fact, should you visit after a bit of rain, there is a secret waterfall along this hike that's just plain perfect. The large falls - Overstreet Falls - is stunning after a rainfall or when frozen by a frigid winter.
As a gorge, the rock formations along this trail are magical and intriguing as well, and you will even find a few caves along the trail, especially near the waterfall. Classic Kentucky scenery!
One of our favorite things about hiking in Kentucky is that you don't have to be an advanced outdoor enthusiast to enjoy our trails -- or revel in views like this.
I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
