I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
Growing up, I can remember the neighborhood kids singing, “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice scream!” None of us really screamed, but the memories are strong. There is just something about homemade ice cream in Kentucky that can make you feel like a kid again, no matter your age. Not all of us can create the creamy goodness at home, but fortunately, we don’t have too. The Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen has quite a few locations scattered around the Northern part of the state.
Here are 10 cool reasons to try this homemade ice cream in Kentucky:
The Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen has been family owned and managed since 1982. The fact it has stayed in the family and maintained the same care and concern for their homemade products makes this an ideal ice cream parlor to visit.
There are 10 different neighborhood locations in Louisville/Jefferson County. If you are ever in town, you will want to look one up if in the mood for delicious, homemade ice cream.
If you have never visited the Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen for homemade ice cream in Kentucky before… you should probably give yourself some time. The menu offers over 100 desserts and combinations of desserts. If you cannot find a desirable combination or single flavor on the menu, you have an abundance to create with.
They have festive named and themed desserts; some based on occasion, some based on mood. They offer a unique combination, bursting with complimentary flavor combinations.
They have homemade pie and ice cream, and it doesn’t get much better than that. Just to name a few, they have mouthwatering flavors made fresh like Dutch Apple Pie, Grasshopper Pie, Derby Pie, Rhubarb Pie, and both Chocolate and Vanilla Chess Pie, which comes highly recommended.
They have cake and cupcakes. Flavors can be normal, like pumpkin spice with cream cheese, chocolate peanut butter, or Boston cream filled. You will also find candy bar themed cupcakes, like Snickers.
They have a variety of unique, homemade ice cream combination treats with toppings like sprinkles, cookie crumbles, candy bars crumbles, whipped cream or nuts. You can switch out ice cream flavors in their menu items in favor of making original combinations, which can be fun. The malts, though made with a mix, are quite good, and one of our favorite items. No matter your desire, they have a flavor combination or opportunity to create one.
Fruit lovers will find a variety of fruit cobblers, pies and cakes available. Blueberry is a favorite, as is cherry, rhubarb, strawberry, apple, blackberry and peach. You can get your fruity pie as the star attraction on the plate, or go ala mode with a scoop of homemade ice cream. Your choice of flavors!
So… they also have homemade cookies and cookie ice cream sandwiches. They have several different cookie varieties available daily. Some are decoratively iced, others are more traditional, like chocolate chip, double chocolate chocolate chip or oatmeal. Personally, I love the sandwich over the plain cookie. Not that the cookie isn’t tasty, but the ice cream is the most creamy, flavorful ice cream available locally. Ben & Jerry’s has nothing on the Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen… though they are pretty awesome for mass produced.
No matter what your dessert mood, you will find something to quench that desire here. We recommend coming here for dessert after dinner, as each delightful flavor combination has been time tested and patron approved. You cannot go wrong stepping through these doors for dessert.
The hot, humid summers of the Bluegrass State make getting ice cream a sweeter than normal experience, especially that of the homemade variety. If you are looking for creamy, flavorful, homemade ice cream in Kentucky, the Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen is the place to go. For those that aren’t located nearby, one of these ice cream shops might be more convenient.
