The Water Is A Brilliant Blue At Geist Reservoir, A Refreshing Stop In Indiana
Hidden away in central Indiana, not terribly far from Indianapolis, is a gorgeous, crystal-clear, blue lake by the name of Geist Reservoir. It was “born” in 1943, though plans for it went back as far as 1913. Upon its completion, it was the second-largest reservoir in all of Indiana, and yet plenty of Hoosiers don’t even know it exists. Those who do, however, understand that Geist Reservoir is one of the all-time best lakes in Indiana to hang out, kick back, and relax at. Check it out for yourself, and see what makes this stunningly blue lake one of our favorites.
Just one look at Geist Reservoir via an aerial view is enough to see just how beautiful the water is.
There are a handful of towns that can call Geist Reservoir their own, including northeastern Indy, Fishers, Fortville, Lawrence, and McCordsville. With more than 6.9 billion gallons of water stored here, it's become a mecca of sorts for outdoorsy folks.
Geist has a surface area of about 1,890 acres, and every single inch is worthy of admiration.
The Dam is an exception, with depths reaching up to 48 feet (though most of the time it's about 26 feet deep). This makes the reservoir nice for water sports, and it's a popular destination among the locals for exactly that.
Kill an entire day boating, tubing, fishing, or simply lounging beside the lake.
The homes built alongside the lake are stunningly beautiful, and somehow, they only add to the overall majesty of Geist Reservoir. It's the perfect blend of man-made beauty and natural beauty, and we adore it.
Sunrises here are great, but sunsets are where the real magic is.
Geist Reservoir is one of the best lakes in Indiana, hands down, and on some days you might even have it mostly to yourself (if you visit during the week especially).

Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
