As Central Illinois' oldest bakery, Trefzger's was established in 1861 by German immigrant Simon Trefzger shortly after moving to Peoria. That is when he began baking bread for Civil War soldiers in Glen Oak Park. The bakery remained in the Trefzger family for 132 years before it was sold to a new family, the Huebners, who have continued to bake high quality traditional and contemporary goods. It is truly one of the best (if not the best) bakeries in Central Illinois.
Trefzger's Bakery moved several times since its founding before occupying its current location in downtown Peoria in 2016.
This large and busy bakery has a vast selection of goods baked from scratch. The monthly chiffon and coffee cake specials provide returning customers something different to look forward to.

A trademark item at Trefzger's is the thumbprint cookies, an item they are famous for that can even be ordered online to ship. They also ship their chocolate coffee cake, butterscotch coffee cake, chocolate-dipped or plain coconut macaroons, and springerles, which are a type of South German biscuit-like cookie.
Exquisite custom cakes can be ordered for any occasion, from birthdays to holidays to weddings.
Enjoy a rotating selection of cream horns, another popular item at the bakery.
From sticky buns with or without pecans to brownies, pies, homemade candy, donuts, cheesecakes, muffins, danish, cinnamon rolls – the list of sweet offerings is almost endless!
But sweet pastries aren't the only items available. There are plenty of savory items for sale too. It's a great place to grab some lunch, maybe a soup, a loaf of bread, or even a quiche.
