The Breathtaking Scenic Drive Through Idaho That Crosses The Henry’s Fork Of The Snake River
With more than 30 scenic byways in Idaho, there are plenty of options when you are in the mood for a scenic drive. Some of these routes are well known and frequently traveled and others are lesser known but still full of gems. The Fort Henry Historic Byway is one of these lesser-known routes and it is absolutely beautiful. Taking you around southeastern Idaho, this route offers lots of beauty, plenty of history, and river views as well. It’s a delightful (and scenic) day trip in Idaho.
The Fort Henry Historic Byway is approximately 90 miles one way. You should plan approximately 2.5 hours of drive time if you choose not to stop.
This route begins at the North Rexburg U.S. 20 exit, onto Salem Highway. Make sure that before you hit the road, you have plenty of gas and road trip snacks as full services are limited along the way. Portions of this route are closed during the winter months so late spring, summer, and fall are the best times for this adventure.
If you want to make a few stops along your way (which I strongly recommend), the St. Anthony Sand Dunes is one of the first destinations you will see.
This is 10,600 acres of beautiful white, quartz sand and it is a popular area for off-road vehicles. However, you are always welcome to explore the areas on foot or horse.
As you continue on your drive, you’ll head on A-2 north, where you will come to the Camas Meadows Battle Sites.
This historic area is the location of the Nez Perce Flight of 1877. Here, a group of Nez Perce warriors raided General Oliver O. Howard’s camp following the attack at Big Hole. Keep in mind that much of this area is private property and not accessible to the public. You will see a roadside kiosk with interpretive panels to teach you more about the area without trespassing.
Hop back in the car and you’ll eventually reach Island Park.
Stretch your legs on one of the many hiking trails, grab something to eat, or even head to the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River and enjoy river views or even try your luck fishing.
If you want to make a large loop as you return home, head back to Rexburg via Highway 20. You’ll pass small towns like Ashton and St. Anthony.
The Fort Henry Historic Byway may be one of the lesser-known routes in southeastern Idaho but it’s perfect for a day trip. The route is short, the views are perfect, and there is history, adventure, and beauty everywhere you look. It’s a bucket-list-worthy adventure.
