Straddling the border between Idaho and Montana is one of the most awe-inspiring hikes you can take in the Gem State. The Scotchman Peaks are a magnificent treasure, but they are surprisingly unknown compared to Idaho’s more popular mountain ranges. This hiking trail up to Scotchman Peak may be long but it’s manageable by most. And trust us, it’s worth it. The views from the trail are mind-blowing. Pictures just don’t do this trail justice but they’ll give you a good idea of what to expect on this one-of-a-kind adventure.

Located near the town of Clark Fork in North Idaho, the trail is well-known to locals and it's an absolute must for any hiking enthusiast. Besides its view, the trail is notable for one other thing: mountain goats.
The trail clocks in at eight miles out-and-back and you're bound to see quite a few mountain goats along the way. There's something pretty amazing about seeing these delightful animals in their habitat. Just be sure not to get too close. The trail had to be closed down in the past due to human interaction with the goats.
The trail will quickly start to gain in elevation. It's not overly difficult but you'll definitely need to take your time. However, it's all worth it. The higher you get, the more stunning the views become.
All ages and all skill levels have been known to accomplish this hike, so don't be discouraged as the elevation begins to pick up. With bright blue skies and views of an endless mountain landscape, you'll be too distracted by the surroundings to think about anything else.
The summit of Scotchman Peak sits at an elevation of over 7,000 feet, so you can imagine how outstanding the view is. The high that comes with reaching the summit is unlike anything else in the world. The summit is covered in large slabs of rock and even an old lookout this perfect for taking in the view.
The gorgeous panorama at the top of the trail includes a view of Lake Pend Oreille in the distance along with rugged valleys and ridges. This is the type of view that you remember for a lifetime.
Are you ready to accomplish this jaw-dropping hike? To get to the trailhead you'll take Highway 200 to Clark Fork. Turn north at the Chevron station and continue on to Lightning Creek Road 419. You'll arrive at the trailhead after approximately three miles. Parking is available on the side of the road.
