Basement bars are pretty common in Wisconsin. However, of all the state's underground watering holes, not many compare to the speakeasy at Maxwell Mansion. Obscurely located, decked out in vintage décor, and requiring a password to enter, it's the perfect place to party like it's 1920!

Located in Lake Geneva, Maxwell Mansion is a beautiful boutique hotel that’s brimming with history and amenities.

Built in 1855, the European-style mansion boasts 28 rooms and plenty of ornate features, such as tall windows, broad entrances, and elaborate moldings.

But one of the mansion’s best features is the speakeasy hidden in its basement.

Just like the speakeasies of the Prohibition era, a password is required to enter. Password clues are posted to the Maxwell Mansion Facebook page.

After gaining entry, you'll descend a set of dimly lit stairs straight into the 1920s!

Filled with themed décor, the bar is like a time capsule, offering visitors the chance to experience one of the nation’s most infamous eras.

The speakeasy opens on select nights. It also plays host to a variety of special events, including murder mystery parties and cabaret shows.
