Highway 51 is a route that many vacationers know well. It’s a corridor into the Northwoods that takes people to some of the top destinations in Northern Wisconsin, and on a Friday night or Sunday afternoon, you’ll see a lot of cars pulling boats and campers. I’ve done this trip a million times.
For many of these travelers, the journey is a lot less remarkable than the destination and involves some long hours in the car. But there’s a great way to spice the trip up.
Just make plans to grab lunch or dinner at Los Mezcales Mexican Restaurant. This little oasis of a restaurant is just off the highway. Merrill is a pleasant town that’s a destination in its own right – it’s nicknamed the City of Parks. But it’s also the city of tacos!
Even if your sights are set on destinations further north, this is still a worthy pit stop. Los Mezcales serves up all the Mexican classics and Tex Mex favorites, like carne asada tacos, chicken bacon avocado tacos, and creamy avocado shrimp.
The restaurant also has a great fish fry!
If you have a driver, go ahead and order what you’re craving – a top-shelf margarita. You won’t find any boring and generic drinks here. The menu includes options like the fresh spicy watermelon margarita! It’s made with real watermelon and a touch of chili lime salt. Delicious!
