This Is Why Saltwater Fish House and Oyster Bar Is the Best Waterfront Dining in Washington for Peak Summer Vibes

Nothing says "summer" like enjoying a plate of fresh oysters with a delicious cocktail.

Nothing says "summer" quite like waterfront dining. Especially in Western Washington—a landscape defined by water—it's hard to beat a sunkissed afternoon when there's good food on the menu. And when that menu highlights our world-famous fisheries? Well, that earns an eatery a spot on your seasonal bucket list.

But where to head for this perfect summer bite? Washington is no stranger to great seafood dining—I'd go so far as to say our seafood scene is one of the country's most criminally underrated. Still, if I had to choose, I'd pick Saltwater Fish House and Oyster Bar. Tucked in the sleepy island town of Langley, it's a neighborhood gem known for serving up the Salish seasons.

Since its debut in 2017, it's focused on capturing local flavors—reimagining fresh ingredients into a revolving menu of mouth-watering dishes.

With its prime location on 1st St, it would be easy for Saltwater to rest on its laurels, relying on passersby and the seasonal influx of tourists drawn to the island for summertime getaways to fill its seats. But that's not the case. As you wait for a table (Saltwater doesn't take reservations), you'll quickly notice it's a local favorite. It's easy to see why. The interiors are laid-back, the service is warm, and the walls are lined with snapshots of Langley's history. In other words, it's the perfect place to feel at home—while enjoying a meal you definitely couldn't make yourself.

Thanks to its generous menu, Saltwater suits a wide range of dining outings. Just looking for a light lunch? Order the clam chowder for $12 and pair it with a Saltwater Mary—a $14 specialty Bloody Mary made with house-infused vodka. Down for indulgence? Swing for Dungeness the crab cakes topped with bright salsa verde, savory manila clams served with tasso ham, or take your pick between fried halibut, cod, or local oysters served with fries.

Oh, and about those oysters—they're not to be missed. Garnished with a wedge of lime or a drizzle of seasonal sauce, they might pack the most star power of all Saltwater's dishes. Unsure what to order? As a diehard Saltwater diner, I wouldn't sleep on the sandwiches. Fair warning: the po'boy and burgers have a way of sneaking into your daydreams. Best of all, you can order either to go and enjoy your meal at Langley's gorgeous Seawall Park.

Washington is full of excellent seafood restaurants, but few offer the local charm, commitment to regional ingredients, or breathtaking waterfront setting of Saltwater Fish House & Oyster Bar. Don't just take my word for it—head there this summer for a dining experience that's bound to become a new tradition. Whether it's your first stop of the day or a well-earned reward after exploring one of Whidbey Island's stunning hikes, this neighborhood gem deserves a spot on your bucket list.
