There’s No Restaurant In The World Like This One In Washington

When it comes to dining experiences, Washingtonians are pretty spoiled. We can enjoy fresh seafood, a perfectly prepared steak and almost all kinds of ethnic cuisine statewide. And we’ve also got a few places that are so unique, no other state has anything like them. Spokane’s Steam Plant Square is one of those places.

The building operated for nearly 70 years as a functional steam plant. But by the mid 80s, it was clear that it was no longer economically sustainable to supply downtown Spokane with steam heat. The last boiler was shut down in 1986, and the dirty, dull building sat empty.

But a decade letter, the steam plant was transformed into a beautiful, bright tribute to the industrial revolution. The current Steam Plant houses a few retail shops and offices along with a one-of-a-kind restaurant called Stacks at Steam Plant.

Stacks offers a truly unique dining experience. Where else in the world can you dine in a massive steam boiler that has been painstakingly renovated to preserve its historic look?

You’ll find some long standing classics on the menu, like the Coal Bunker Cheese Bread and Beer Cheese Soup. New northwest inspired entrees are also offered every season to help keep the menu fresh.

As if the tasty food options aren’t enough, Stacks is also a brewery. There’s a small 10 barrel system that has been in the back of the restaurant since 1999. The landmark beer is the Double Stack Stout, but they offer a wide variety of brew.

In 2001, Steam Plant Square became the first historic building in Spokane to receive the prestigious National Preservation Honor Award. The next time you’re in town, stop the this local landmark, have a meal and take a walking tour.

There's no shortage of wonderful places to dine in Washington. If you can't make it to Steam Plant anytime soon, check out these delicious local options.
