We're no strangers to creative cuisine here in Washington, and it's safe to say we love our decadent desserts. And if donuts happen to be your indulgence of choice, head straight to Seattle's International District when it's time to treat yourself. A new donut shop just opened, and they make authentic, delicious Japanese mochi donuts... and we guarantee you've never had anything like them.
Dochi opened in Seattle in mid-August, but the company is actually based out of Orlando.
Dochi has built up a huge following in Florida, and owner Jason Le — who used to live in Seattle — thought Washingtonians would appreciate these unique donuts.
Dochi is located in the Uwajimaya Village Food Court, an Asian food superstore with some delightful places to eat.
Jason is partnering with his brother, Michael Le, owner of the nearby goPoke.
These donuts are softer, airier, and chewier than traditional donuts and some flavors aren't as sweet.
The reason for this unique shape, however, is pretty sweet — they're made of small circles to make them easier to share (sharing is, of course, optional).
Flavors here change daily.
You might see matcha Oreo, Fruity Pebbles, Strawberry Shortcake, or Coffee ed Velvet donuts in the case, depending on the day.
Needless to say, Dochi is already incredibly popular.
Don't be surprised if you have to wait in line for your donuts — they're worth the wait. Because of the shop's popularity, you can't buy more than a dozen at a time, which might prove to be more difficult than it seems.
Dochi is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon until 6 p.m.
If you have you heart set on these unique donuts, go early — once the donuts are gone, Dochi closes for the day.
So what is a mochi donut? Well, it's a beautiful sight, for starters.
Mochi is a Japanese rice cake made of mochigome, a short-grain rice. While mochi itself isn't a dessert, it makes a fantastic dessert base.
