The Off-the-Beaten-Path Restaurant in Virginia That Is Worth the Day Trip

Alexandria's Osteria Marzano is an authentic Italian kitchen with a vibrant atmosphere, picture-perfect pastas, and glowing reviews.

With our proximity to Washington D.C. and foodie-approved destinations like Richmond and Virginia Beach, it's never too difficult to find that next great meal here in Virginia. But if you're willing to travel a bit off the beaten path, you'll find a treasure trove of culinary delights. And, truth be told, these restaurants are that much better simply because they're local gems. Today's feature restaurant is a case in point. Osteria Marzano has brought the gift of authentic Italian food to Alexandria, Virginia, but that's only the beginning of what makes this restaurant so visit-worthy.

It all began in Calabria, Italy, where head chef Carmine Marzano was born and quickly inherited his father's love of cooking. After completing his culinary training at Istituto Alberghiero Statale di Pienerolo, he was the Executive Chef at Ristorante Giudice in Turin, Italy before coming to the U.S. Shortly after, chef Marzano married Deborah Bruzzo, who matched his enthusiasm for Italian cooking. After running Ristorante Luigino for 15 years, chef Carmine and his daughter, Elena, opened the family-run Osteria Marzano.

From the moment you set foot inside the restaurant, you'll discover that food and family are at its heart. The Marzano family wanted to create a space that would feel like a second home. The father-daughter duo is committed to bringing creativity and authenticity to each dish, while also ensuring that the guests feel welcome. This will surely translate into one of the most memorable Italian meals you've ever had here in Virginia.

The menu offers a range of sharable assaggini Italian tapas-style bites and heartier plates. They also offer hand-made pastas, seafood, risotto, and much more. Perhaps the most unique plate of all is the Cheese Wheel Experience, a dish prepared tableside in a 90-pound parmigiano wheel. You'll enjoy handmade fettuccine sautéed in a decadent cream sauce and black pepper, with the option of adding on chicken, shrimp, salmon, jumbo lump crab, or a filet.

Once you're ready for dessert, prepare to be enchanted by the tiramisu, crafted with imported all-Italian ingredients.

Drinks are equally memorable, with an impressive list of specialty cocktails, beer, and wine to choose from. A happy hour menu is also offered at the bar.
