Fall is here - or as I like to call it, "pie season." Now, I know that pie is perfect any time of year. But there's something about fall that makes me crave warm fillings and flaky crusts. Fortunately, there's no shortage of places to find the perfect pie in Virginia. From specialty bakeries to family restaurants specializing in down-home Southern cooking, you won't have far to go to find your new favorite dessert.

1. Mom's Apple Pie Co., Leesburg and Occoquan

Already touted as one our top bakeries in the state, Mom's Apple Pie Co. has earned the right to a second shout-out. Offering handmade pies, breads, and cookies, the bakers at Mom’s Apple Pie Co. undoubtedly make their mamas’ proud. By growing much of the fruit that goes into the mouth-watering pies, these guys ensure the tastiest, freshest ingredients. If you're looking for a recommendation, Southern Living featured their Blackberry Pie on their list of "The South's Best Pies." 2. The Red Truck Bakery, Warrenton and Marshall

Another one of our favorite bakeries, a small town location hasn’t kept this bakery from earning HUGE awards. With top rankings from national publications, including CondeNast, The New York Times, Esquire and Southern Living, this little shop serves award-winning pies, cookies, soups and sandwiches. 3. Proper Pie Co., Richmond

Featuring sweet AND savory pies, this little shop has been making big waves in Richmond since opening in November 2012. Chef and owner, Neil Smith, started Proper Pie Co as a way to recreate the savory pies of his native New Zealand, but with sweet offerings like mango custard, sweet potato and pecan (shown here) and pumpkin with salted caramel, you really can't go wrong. 4. Woodruff's Cafe and Pie Shop, Monroe

People can't seem to say enough about Woodruff's Cafe and Pie Shop - or get enough of their pies. Featured in more than one national publication, including Southern Living, Woodruff's may be small and out of the way, but their pies are worth the trip. 5. Piety, Roanoke

Although they offer regular-sized pies, Piety has made a name for themselves with their truly delectable "little" pies - handcrafted individual portions that pack all the flavor of a full-sized pie in a single handheld treat. With seasonal offerings that change on a regular basis, you can choose from fruit pies, cream pies and specialties like the Death By Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. 6. Anthony's Desserts, Abingdon

For all the times you've wished there was a restaurant that just served desserts, Anthony's Desserts makes your wishes come true. Featuring everything from cakes to handcrafted chocolates, you can't go wrong with Anthony's menu - but the pie…you must try the pie. Choose from classics like key lime in full-size or individually-sized pies and tarts or try a special creation like the chocolate peanut-butter tart shown here. 7. Blackbird Bakery, Bristol

This neighborhood bakery prides itself on old-fashioned goodness and service. With all of its items made-from-scratch, you can enjoy all your standard bakery items, made-to-perfection in a down-home environment right in the heart of historic downtown Bristol. BUT, what you won't want to miss are Blackbird's pies and tarts. Featuring fresh fillings and flaky crusts, these tasty little pies will melt in your mouth. 8. Pie Gourmet, Vienna

With well over 45 different flavors to choose from, Pie Gourmet is one place where you won't have to worry about choosing quality over quantity. These perfectly crafted homemade pies are made fresh and have been keeping customers coming back time and again for more than 20 years. 9. Floozies Pie Shop, Louisa

When it comes to perfect pies, Floozies doesn't mess around. Attached to Obrigado's Restaurant in downtown Louisa, Floozies is a favorite stop for freshly baked, homemade pies and pastries. With daily specials and standard favorites, you're sure to find exactly what you're craving. The sour cherry and chocolate-peanut-butter-pretzel pies pictured here are 2 great places to start. 10. Southern Kitchen, New Market

Long known as a premier destination for Virginia classics like ham biscuits and peanut soup, Southern Kitchen puts New Market on the map. But when it's time for dessert, Southern Kitchen keeps their reputation for proper southern food alive with classically perfect pies. The food gurus at Roadfood.com suggest a healthy serving of apple or coconut cream, and I, for one, won't argue. Find your favorite at Southern Kitchen, 9576 S Congress St, New Market, VA.

11. The Horseshoe Restaurant, South Hill

The Horseshoe may not have the glitz and glamor of a big city gourmet restaurant, but you'd never know it from the food. Already featured as one of our top spots for burgers in Virginia, The Horseshoe serves up some of the state's best pies to boot. With southern classics like lemon chess pie, brown sugar pie and peanut butter pie, you might just want to order dessert first. Be sure to visit them in South Hill at 311 W Danville Street.

12. Jamestown Pie Co., Williamsburg

Since 2004, Jamestown Pie Co. has been serving up some of the area's tastiest pie - both sweet and savory. Known for their mouth-watering, freshly made dessert pies, Jamestown Pie Co. offers flavors like strawberry-rhubarb, blackberry (or blueberry) peach and chocolate pecan. 13. Mrs. Rowe's Family Restaurant and Bakery, Staunton

Since 1947, Mrs. Rowe's has been a favorite for Staunton area residents. Known for home-cooked meals and freshly made bakery treats, Mrs. Rowe's goes above and beyond with their handcrafted pies. Featuring more than 15 mouth-watering flavors, Mrs. Rowe's serves up a little taste of old-fashioned goodness in every bite.
