The Train-Themed Restaurant In Utah That Will Make You Feel Like A Kid Again
The Heber Valley has a long history of trains. The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad once ran a line between Provo and Heber City that delivered passengers and freight back and forth from 1899 until 1967. The Heber Valley Historic Railroad (previously called the "Heber Creeper") opened up for tourist use in the 1970s.
The Dairy Keen restaurant in Heber celebrates that valley's railroad history. Take a look at this train-themed restaurant!
Dairy Keen is located at 199 S. Main Street in Heber.
This fourth-generation, family-owned restaurant has been in business since 1946. Originally just a fast-food restaurant, it became a train-themed restaurant to honor the history of the Heber Creeper (now the Heber Valley Railroad).
The train that runs along the ceiling inside has been there since 1984.
The train in the dining room runs all day long. It's a replica of the Denver Rio Grande train that once served the Heber Valley. Dairy Keen has eight train engines that it rotates - because they're constantly running, they have to be serviced every two weeks.
Outside, kids love to eat at the train tables.
Inside, the restaurant has wood train sets that provide train-themed entertainment when the weather is cold.
These are set up for kids, but let's be honest...the parents like to play with the train sets, too.
The lego table is another popular form of entertainment when the weather is chilly.
...and parents like this one, too.
In addition to all the cool trains, Dairy Keen has really tasty food.
The restaurant has won 25 Best of State awards for its food, going back to 2003! The "Train Burger" is particularly popular - it's a burger with ham and cheese. The crispy onion rings and fries are delicious, alongside fry sauce, of course.
Dairy Keen is also famous for its homemade soups.
It won Best of State for soups in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Kids meals come with conductor hats!
Dairy Keen is open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; closed on Sunday.
