More than 100 years ago, Eugenia Duke (of Duke's Mayonnaise fame) began selling her homemade spreads on sandwiches in and around Greenville, South Carolina. The year was 1917. The sandwiches grew so much in popularity, there was a day in 1919 when Duke reportedly sold 10,000 sandwiches in a single day. And for more than 100 years, Duke's sandwiches have been fetching accolades from people all over the Upstate.
Some seven years after Eugenia Duke sold her first sandwich, in 1923, she began bottling her famous mayonnaise, packaged as Duke's Mayonnaise.
It's presently ranked the number three mayonnaise in the U.S., falling behind Hellman's and Kraft. And by 1929, the demand for Duke's Mayonnaise went beyond what Eugenia could keep up with, so she sold her mayonnaise line to the C. F. Sauer and Company, who quickly established a factory outside of Greenville to manufacture the product.
That same year, Eugenia Duke also got out of the sandwich business, selling her line of spreads to her bookkeeper, Alan Hart.
And although Duke stepped back from the business at the time, her sandwiches and famous homemade spreads live on at the old-school Duke Sandwich Company, which opened on Poinsett Highway in Greenville in 1979.
Welcome to Duke Sandwich Company, where you can feast on any number of homemade, famous spreads that originated in the kitchen of Eugenia Duke, the inventor or Duke's Mayonnaise.
