Cowabunga in Wakefield, Rhode Island, offers award-winning sandwiches and smoothies made with fresh ingredients.

We take our sandwiches seriously here in Rhode Island, and we're not just talking about lobster rolls (although we love them, too). So when we hear about an award-winning sandwich shop, we have no choice but to investigate. And if you have yet to try to tasty sandwiches and addictive smoothies at Cowabunga, we highly recommend you change that as soon as possible. This place takes lunch to a whole new delicious level.

Cowabunga is located in Wakefield, the tiny village in the town of South Kingstown.

You'll find this gem on Robinson Street in a cute little yellow building you can't miss.

Cowabunga was founded by a couple of longtime locals, one of whom grew up half a mile from the sandwich shop.

The restaurant is fairly new, and it already has an outstanding reputation.

The sandwiches here are truly remarkable.

The secret is simply using fresh ingredients that are sliced and prepared daily.

The most popular options are the grilled sandwiches, especially the Beach Bum (grilled chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado, pictured here) and the Lunch Lady (turkey, mozzarella, avocado, lettuce, balsamic vinegar, and mayo).

However, if you'd like to stick to the classics, they also offer a great selection of cold sandwiches. They even have a Bunga Style menu, meaning the chips go right into your wrap (and you'll love it).

if you're more of a wrap person, the classic Chicken Caesar Wrap is delightful.

And if you're a vegetarian or vegan, there's an entire section of meatless selections.

In the mood for a smoothie? Cowabunga doesn't use syrups or added sugar, but they do use real fruit.

You can also choose to make it dairy free or add a little protein powder.

Cowabunga has won numerous local awards, including one for Best Sandwich Shop in Southern Rhode Island.

They're open Monday - Friday from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 11 - 3.
