The Restaurant In Pennsylvania That Was Named One Of The Best In The World

Feel as though you've been transported to Jerusalem when you step through the entry way at Zahav in Pennsylvania, an Israeli restaurant that has earned a coveted spot on the Conde Nast Traveler's list of world's best restaurants.

Zahav, or gold in Hebrew, made its debut on the Philadelphia food scene in 2008, introducing Pennsylvanians to modern Israeli cuisine and culture.

Warmth exudes from Zahav's interior, reminiscent of an Israeli courtyard with its high ceilings, hand-carved tables, and limestone walls and floors in a shade of gold.

Chef Michael Solomonov, Israeli born, Pittsburgh raised and the brainchild behind Zahav, kicked off his culinary career after moving back to Israel as a teen and securing employment in a bakery.

Today, after winning numerous prestigious culinary awards including the James Beard Award for the Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic, Solomonov welcomes guests to watch him at work in the open kitchen as he prepares such scrumptious Israeli dishes as...

Challah and pita. But, that's merely the beginning. Peruse a generous dinner menu that features chicken pastilla, grilled duck hearts, spiced egg plant, and...

Salatim (salad) and laffa. Dip your freshly made laffa, baked in the roaring wood oven, in hummus as you await your main course.

Braised lamb with chickpeas is one of Zahav's signature entrees. Pair your meal with a cocktail, a beer, or wine from Israel, Palestine, Turkey, Morocco, or Lebanon.

Tantalize your taste buds by topping off your meal with one of Zahav's popular desserts: grapefruit sorbet, coffee custard, pistachio cake, or chocolate konafi. Pictured below is a chocolate apollonia cake.

Plan your visit to Zahav Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Reservations can be made up to two months in advance.
