Everyone is constantly talking about how good the food is in Portland, and it's completely true. There's a delicious restaurant to write home about on every corner. However, it's incredibly important to note the restaurants that are entirely underrated and better than you'd guess. Here's a list of the best 'hole in the wall' restaurants in Portland:

1. Chai Thai - Hazelwood

A true Portland gem. When you walk in, you immediately feel at home. With an open kitchen and walls filled with memories, it seems as though it can't get any better, and then you try the food.

2. The Waffle Window - Multiple Locations

Waffle Window is an any season, any hour delight. The establishment features an actual window to order your unique waffle preference. The only hitch to such tasty food is figuring out where to eat, whether it be curb side, the back patio, or the few indoor seats, I'm sure you'll make it work.

3. Taqueria y Panaderia Santa Cruz - St. John's

If you're looking for an authentic street taco, you'll have to go the deepest depths of North Portland, but it's worth it. Tucked behind a grocery store, is a spacious taqueria that serves out the best of the best.

4. Du's Grill - Rose City

If you grew up in the Rose City District, read no further. If you didn't, then drop everything you're doing right now (unless it's after 8:30pm or the weekend) and go get yourself the best teriyaki chicken in Portland.

5. An Xuyen Bakery - SE Portland

If daily house-baked baguettes aren't incentive enough, then let the traditional banh mi do the talking. Bonus: the Vietnamese coffee.

6. Katie O' Brien's - NE Portland

You really can't do better than a $5 breakfast at a local old school Irish pub. The chicken fried steak with fried eggs is a must!

7. Devil's Dill Sandwich Shop - SE Portland

I mean, look at that picture. What more can I really say? Oh, and they're open until 2am!

8. Rovente Pizzeria

Although this pizza joint is literally the size of a closet, they are known on Hawthorne to have the tastiest pies by the slice. Open since 1998, this isn't your run of the mill pizza restaurant.

9. Prasad Cafe - Pearl District

Nestled inside of Pearl Yoga is a delicious health food and juice restaurant. It's almost completely unnoticeable from the outside, making it a true hidden treasure. You have to try one of their custom fresh juices!

The place you go if you consider yourself a true sandwich fanatic. Taste Tickler's unique sandwich combinations will make you never want to look at a Subway ever again.
