POV: You just sat down to eat a delicious meal at one of the most iconic restaurants in Little Italy.
Mamma Santa's, sometimes stylized as Mama Santa thanks to its old-school sign, has been a staple for Clevelanders since 1961.
In addition to delicious flavors, there's a history baked into the food here.
The restaurant was established by the Scaffidis in June of 1961. Guido and Nancy — who came to Ohio from Gioiosa Marea, Sicily — had previously worked in the auto repair and hairdressing industries, respectively. Also worth mentioning is Guido's veteran status... he served in World War II, and he was even a prisoner of war for a moment in time.
When Guido and Nancy Scaffidi opened their restaurant, they leaned into authentic Sicilian recipes passed down by Nancy's mother.
This history explains the name! Mamma Santa's was named after Nancy's mother, Santa Ignazzito. While it all started with Santa's recipes, the restaurant has remained in the family. The founders' children and grandchildren now keep the legacy of flavor alive while honoring their own ancestry every day to create the best pizza in Cleveland Little Italy.
As a result, visitors to this restaurant in Little Italy come for the coveted Sicilian menu.
If you're dining in, you have to experience a whole meal... starting with an appetizer! With delicious salads, antipasto, garlic toast, mozzarella sticks, and more, your whole table will adore these sharable meal starters.
When it comes to entrees, you'll find sandwiches, pasta, veal, chicken, shrimp, and even fish fry.
Whatever you decide on, you can rest assured that pure deliciousness awaits your taste buds. There's truly something for everyone on the menu!
While you're dining in, you'll appreciate an old-school ambiance that has changed very little since the restaurant opened.
If you look closely, you'll see that the building in general has changed little over its century of existence. In its past life, the building hosted several other businesses, including a bank, clothing store, and even a cafe. Yesteryear's story is carved into the building's old bones if you know where to look!
And whether you're dining in or carrying out, you have to try their pizza.
Many would consider this to be the best pizza in Little Italy. This place is truly storied, with some locals having enjoyed their pizza for 62 long years. You'll find love at first bite... that's amore.
