You can't judge a book by it's cover, and in North Carolina, you can't judge a restaurant by its exterior! We've perfected the art of 'joints.' Small, unassuming pop-in-pop-out restaurants that are hiding some of the best food in our state. Give these ten a try, you won't regret it!

1. Big Oak Drive In, Salter Path

For a beachside shrimp burger or BBQ, try Big Oak. It doesn't look like much but is hiding delicious, quick, and cheap sandwiches.

2. Brooks' Sandwich House, Charlotte

Brooks' is a bit hard to find, and takes cash only, but arguably has one of the best 'Carolina Style' burgers you'll have in Charlotte and maybe North Carolina.

3. B's Barbecue, Greenville

An out-of-stater might look at B's and think, oh that abandoned building is cute, but little do they know that some of the best BBQ in the state comes straight from those windows. Most days there's a good line out the building.

4. The 'Honey Monk' in Lexington

For Lexington-style BBQ, go straight to its birthplace, Lexington. Of course, there are several joints throughout the town, but the 'Honey Monk' or simply Lexington BBQ is the best. You can't miss it as there is a massive sign positioned to the side of the road.

5. Price's Chicken Coop, Charlotte

For the best fried chicken you'll find in Charlotte, the state, and maybe your life, go to Price's Chicken Coop.

6. Snappy Lunch, Mt. Airy

It doesn't look like much, but this little hole-in-the-wall has had a mention on the Andy Griffith Show, and today, the interior displays some past memorabilia in honor of Andy himself. This is a local, and fan favorite for a 'snappy' lunch.

7. Johnson's Drive In, Siler City

Come before the crowd and try a Velveeta burger with fries and a coke for under 5 bucks. You can't beat that!

8. Pete's Burgers and More, Reidsville

Yeah, it doesn't look like much at all, but THAT burger above came out of THERE, so yeah, bringing this article full circle now.

9. Short Sugar's Pit Bar-B-Q, Reidsville

The exterior and interior of Short Sugars might look like the building is stuck in the 1950's, but the cooking, the traditions, and the BBQ is some of the best in the state. People come from all over the nation to try Short Sugars.

10. Wards Grill, Whiteville

Ward's Grill is a literal hole-in-the-wall, but the food that comes out of here is absolutely delicious. If you appreciate a good burger, try Ward's.
