The Delicious Chocolate Shop in North Carolina to Visit for a Sweet Treat

What started out as a modest kitchen operation has since expanded into one of North Carolina's most famous chocolatiers. Sign up for a chocolate factory tour or sample some made-from-scratch confections for a sweet escape in Asheville, NC.

I remember the very first time I set foot inside French Broad Chocolates in Asheville, North Carolina. I was mesmerized by the beautiful displays, the light-blue motif, and the subtle yet unmistakable scent of gourmet chocolate. I ordered a few homemade truffles and was immediately convinced that these were some of the best chocolates I'd ever tasted. Though I no longer live in North Carolina, I continue to order from French Broad Chocolates, whether to celebrate a special occasion or give a meaningful (and delicious) gift.

French Broad Chocolates was started by Dan Rattigan and Jael Skeffington, who began their chocolate business out of their home kitchen. The chocolates were sold online and in local farmers markets, quickly gaining popularity. It wasn't long before the demand for these homemade chocolates outgrew the cooking space, so in 2008, the French Broad Chocolate Lounge officially opened its doors. Eventually, to accommodate all of its loyal patrons, the chocolate shop expanded and then moved to its current location in the heart of downtown Asheville in Pack Square.

From its earliest days, the mission of French Broad Chocolates has been to source its cacao from trusted farmers. With this high-quality cocoa as the base, the chocolatiers add only the finest ingredients to create something truly special. And the possibilities here are virtually endless. Today, French Broad Chocolates produces nearly 50 tons of chocolate annually, from bite-sized chocolate chips to gourmet brownies and cakes and everything in between.

There are a few different ways to experience French Broad Chocolates in North Carolina. The signature experience is, of course, the Chocolate Lounge at 10 South Pack Square, where you can treat yourself to mouthwatering confections, bonbons, truffles, baked goods, and even ice cream. Plus, there's a dedicated menu for drinking chocolate, a can't-be-missed experience, especially during the wintertime.

If you're curious about how the chocolate is actually made, don't miss a chance to visit the Chocolate Factory Cafe, located at 821 Riverside Drive. In addition to the full gift shop and store, this location also features the factory where the chocolates are created. Tours are offered on a weekly basis for those who want an in-depth knowledge of the chocolate-making magic.

If you can't make it to French Broad Chocolates in Asheville in person, you can order some of their most popular products online. I'm personally a huge fan of their baking chocolate chips; they're amazing in cookies and quite possibly just as good eaten straight from the bag!
