New Jersey has the best pizza, panzarotti, bagels, and breakfast sandwiches (pork roll/taylor ham with egg and cheese on a hard roll) in the country. Of this, I am certain. I am also very biased but I do think that many of us would agree that they're great. If we're talking best in the world, though, one dish stands out...sliders. Hamburger sliders, in particular.
If you live within a 50-mile radius of Hackensack, you're probably familiar with White Manna. This lovely little eatery has been a local favorite since 1946.
And when I say little, I mean little. There are a few countertop seats along the windows and in front of the grill. I doubt it's much more than a dozen.
As popular as it is, you'd expect it to get crowded. It definitely does, but that's all part of the experience.
The menu is just as tiny as the restaurant. There are hamburgers, cheeseburgers, double hamburgers, double cheeseburgers, steak sandwiches, cheese sandwiches, fries, and milkshakes.
Everything is good but the single cheeseburger with onions and pickles is heaven on earth!
The burgers are so iconic that they've been featured on the Food Network television series Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Food Fued, and The Best Thing I Ever Ate, as well as Man v. Food and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on the Travel Channel.
They've also been voted among the best burgers in the U.S. by The Daily Meal and Grub Street called them "a reason to travel to New Jersey." "It's not a road trip, it's a pilgrimage."
To top it all off, you get a little show while you wait for your meal. Burgers are made to order, in front of your eyes. They're always warm, fresh, and delicious!
Have you been to White Manna yet? If not, make the pilgrimage ASAP. You can find them at 358 River Street, Hackensack. They are open daily - hours vary. For more must try foods in the Garden State, check out these Jersey Shore favorites.
