We all love the Jersey Shore - but how many New Jersey residents know all of it? Of course, there's the shore making its way up and down the Garden State's Atlantic coast, with its world-famous views and attractions. Then there's the Delaware Water Gap coast, much less known but full of affordable summer getaways. Then there's the southern coast, home to rural Cumberland County - and it might just be the best-kept secret in the state. This is a heavy fishing and blue-collar area, and it can be a long drive to get there. That's why I was so surprised to find the best rural seafood restaurant in NJ, The Red Eyed Crab, hiding in the tiny community of Port Norris. It might just have the best seafood in New Jersey, in a wonderfully out-of-the-way location that's more than worth the drive.
Port Norris is a small town of just over 1,000, which used to be the hub of New Jersey's oyster-fishing industry. Remnants of this can still be seen today - like this massive pile of oyster shells.
The heart of the town is The Red Eyed Crab, an old-fashioned seafood shack that feels like it came right out of an old movie.
Inside, the restaurant has a unique nautical feel. It's not hard to figure out that the highlight here is seafood, and lots of it!
The best local catch has been fried up, and can be had as a sandwich or in a basket with fries. All the fried options are excellent.
However, the real highlight here is crabs - perfectly steamed and served with a flavorful seasoning when the fishing season is in full swing.
One of the most popular ways to try the seafood here is in a steampot, with a mix of crabs, shrimp, potatoes, sausage, and corn all cooked together .
It's not all seafood classics, though - The Red Eyed Crab also has some modern twists and regional favorites incorporating the same excellent seafood. You'll also find steak and pork entrees if someone in your party isn't in the mood for seafood.
Make sure to take a few minutes to look around the restaurant for the various sculptures and nautical designs circling the restaurant - it's a one-of-a-kind place!
