Pizza shops are part of the heart of any downtown. You can always count on pizza to be there as a comfort food, no matter if you are a plain cheese person or love all the fixins on the menu. But there are pizza shops and then there are PIZZA shops, if you know what I mean. Tucked away downtown on Pleasant Street Extension, the newest pizzeria in Concord, SourJoe's serves up gourmet pizza with a different flair.
SourJoe's Pizzeria in downtown Concord takes its name from the sourdough starter that forms the base for its culinary creations.
Owner Greg Sturgis fashions his creations into an eclectic combination based on both Sicilian and Detroit-style pizzas.
Sturgis has also been influenced by cuisines from other countries around the world, including Germany - a location that may not come to mind when thinking of pizza.
Instead of relying on frozen dough as a starter, SourJoe's makes its own sourdough crust fresh each day.
These aren't your typical pizza toppings. They are a unique take on the familiar, such as pepperoni with a hot honey drizzle.
Other flavorful toppings include fennel sausage that's been spiced up with peppadew peppers and house-roasted mushrooms with aioli.
SourJoe's pizzas are the star attraction of this small eatery, but sandwiches like the calabrese salami and the Italian sando are also on the menu.

While SourJoe's is one of the newest pizza shops on the block, you'll also find some seriously tasty slices at the legendary Alley Cat Pizzeria in Manchester. They've been slinging 'za for more than 25 years, so you know it's gotta be good!
