The greasy spoon diner is a classic, isn't it? Everyone wants their own place to belong, where folks know your name and the coke is always ice cold. A place to bring our kids to chow down on cheeseburgers, where we can indulge in a milkshake with friends that we love and consider family. Here in Nashville (and around, let's be honest here) we have ten diners and breakfast spots that may be considered a greasy spoon, per say - we just call them our second kitchen. Happy dining, friends!
8. Dino's
Dino's is considered one of the oldest dive bars in Nashville, and it's a great space for just chillin' with the locals and enjoying an order of cheesy fries. Their cheeseburgers are also lauded by many a Nashvillian, and its recently renovated back porch area is a great hangout with a PBR in hand. It's just that kind of down-home space. (411 Gallatin Avenue)
7. Hermitage Cafe
Hermitage Cafe is just a stone's throw from downtown Nashville, which makes it a great space for folks coming straight off the Honkytonk Highway. Open late nights and early mornings through lunchtime, the recently renovated space is a blast from the deep Tennessee past - and we have quite the soft spot for their pancakes! (71 Hermitage Avenue)
6. Dandgure's Cafe
This cafeteria-style meat-and-three has been serving up classic Southern food for over 25 years. Though the neighborhood around it has changed drastically in that time, Dandgure's has not. Be sure to try some of Dan's famous fried chicken! (538 Lafayette Street)
5. Arnold's Country Kitchen
Arnold's Country Kitchen is southern cooking at its best. You can choose between iconic southern or soul food in the cafeteria-based layout. Enjoy classics like the old school meat-and-three, delicious macaroni and cheese or even fried chicken. We're on board! (605 8th Ave S)
4. Wendell Smith's Restaurant
Located in West Nashville, this unassuming little diner is a powerhouse when it comes to a solid cup of coffee and good cooking. We'd recommend their macaroni and cheese and their cheeseburgers, which is a definite must for any greasy spoon. Open from 6am to 730pm every day but Sunday (it's closed!), you can indulge all day long. (407 53rd Ave N)
3. Brown's Diner
It's easy to overlook this spot just outside of the main strip of Hillsboro Village, but they've been serving up their iconic, award-winning cheeseburgers for almost 90 years now. Don't miss this Nashville institution. (2102 Blair Boulevard)
2. The Loveless Cafe
The Loveless Café is legendary for their absolutely immaculate biscuits. This down-home country café has been serving up their home-cooked Southern meals for over 65 years, and they aren't stopping any time soon. (8400 Highway 100)
1. Marcy Jo's Mealhouse and Bakery
Located in Columbia, Marcy Jo's Mealhouse is one of our favorite places in Middle Tennessee. It's a conglomeration of old school southern charm and delicious food, a kind waitstaff honed by a connection to the restaurant's deep family history. We'd recommend the Elvis cake and their cinnamon rolls - but be warned. Their biscuits and gravy are bound to have you full 'til Friday. (4205 US-431)
Continue the adventure with a trip to this unassuming town with the best Tennessee Mexican food - ever.
